Question to the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero:
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what recent assessment she has made of the potential merits of requiring Ofgem to produce disaggregated energy debt data for each UK nation.
Data regarding the total value of energy debt in the UK is held by Ofgem. Ofgem publish debt and arrears indicators on their website: Debt and arrears indicators | Ofgem. In 2026 Q2, the total financial value of domestic customer debt and arrears (existing for more than 91 days) was £5.02 billion for electric and gas. The Department has not made an assessment of the value of debt in each UK nation.
We are working closely with Ofgem to consider a range of options to reduce energy debt in the system and understand the impacts of different approaches on consumers.
