Question to the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, with reference to his Department’s press release entitled Joint Statement of 16th Meeting of the India–UK JETCO, published on 12 October 2026, what estimate his Department has made of the additional economic activity represented by the early increases in trade reported under the agreement; and what assessment his Department has made of the potential impact of these increases on (a) trade displacement from other UK trading partners and (b) anticipated future exports to India.

The Department has not made such estimates or assessments. This is because such analysis would not be proportionate, credible or robust at such an early stage following the UK-India CETA’s entry into force in July 2026. Instead, the Department’s CETA monitoring activities track early-stage implementation and utilisation and are not designed to assess CETA’s impacts over the very short-term. Impacts of trade changes following an FTA’s entry into force can be robustly assessed using specialist evaluation techniques over the medium- to longer-term once sufficient data has become available.
