The department is working with Ipsos to finalise the research design and ensure analytical robustness. As such, the survey has not yet been conducted and therefore, results have not been reported to the Secretary of State’s office.

This survey is part of a research project looking to quantify the key societal benefits associated with prison provision. The survey aims to quantify the retributive benefit of prison. As the approach to quantifying the retribution effect is novel, the Ministry of Justice will need to go through standard quality assurance processes to determine whether results are useable as part of our wider ‘value of a prison place’ work.

Once the fieldwork has been completed and results have been quality assured, they will be shared with the Secretary of State.
