Fuel duty will continue to play an important role in the tax system in the short and medium term. Last year the Government raised about £700 billion across all taxes, levies and duties; of which £28 billion was raised from fuel duty.

Technology is changing many aspects of the economy, including vehicles, and the Government is considering how the tax system will need to adapt to manage those changes.
