The Secretary of State did receive a severance payment when leaving his post previously, as set out in legislation (Section 4 of the Ministerial and Other Pensions and Salaries Act 1991). Details of this payment can be found in the annual report and accounts.

On returning to his post in October 2022, The Secretary of State arranged to repay the full amount to the Department.
