Polymyalgia rheumatica is usually treated with oral or intramuscular steroid treatment and pain relieving medication. Patients who do not respond to steroid treatments may be prescribed an immunosuppressant drug, such as methotrexate.

The availability of new treatments for the condition will be subject to such treatments having demonstrated their safety, efficacy and cost effectiveness.
