The Department is aware of recent research to suggest a compound found in dogfish, called squalamine, could be used to treat Parkinson’s disease, and that a trial of the treatment is now being considered. The future availability of a squalamine based treatment on the National Health Service would be subject to large scale clinical trials demonstrating the safety and efficacy of this treatment approach and subsequent assessments of its cost effectiveness for routine use.
