E-bikes which comply with the requirements of the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle Regulations 1983 are treated in the same way as ordinary pedal cycles. The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 require cyclists to have their front and red light lit when riding at night, and cycles must also be fitted with a red rear reflector. No further regulations are planned.

Rental e-scooters used in approved Government trials are required to have front and rear lights, rear and side reflectors.

Private e-scoters are illegal to use on public roads, cycle lanes and pavements. We remain committed to delivering legislation to regulate micromobility vehicles, and we will be consulting on detailed proposals for e-scooters by summer 2027.
