The Government does not regulate ‘smart city’ or Internet of Things ecosystems as a distinct category. Its focus is on ensuring that connected technology meets minimum security requirements (the PSTI Act 2022), and that essential networks and services are resilient (the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill). The Government Cyber Action Plan sets out how we will achieve a step change in cyber security and digital resilience across government and the wider public sector (including local authorities). Owners and developers of smart city infrastructure should also follow the National Cyber Security Centre’s connected places cyber security principles, and the Government’s secure connected places playbook.
