Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many people have undergone an organ transplant in each of the last five years.
Since the launch of the United Kingdom-wide ‘Taking Organ Transplantation to 2020 Strategy’ in July 2013, organ donation rates have increased by 19% and transplant rates by 15% mainly through a strengthening of the donation infrastructure (e.g. increased specialist nurses, improved retrieval arrangements).
In 2017-18, the UK had the highest ever deceased donor and transplant rates. The number of transplants (including living and deceased donations) performed in the UK for each of the five years is set out below:
2017/18 – 4,969*
2016/17 – 4,753
2015/16 – 4,601
2014/15 – 4,431
2013/14 – 4,655
