Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, pursuant to the Answer of 15 January 2018 to Question 122074, on Respiratory System: Medical Equipment, if he will publish the number of adult extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation beds occupied in each week in (a) January 2018 and (b) February 2018.

NHS England commissions 15 adult respiratory extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) beds from five providers. In periods of high demand, capacity can be increased in line with an agreed standard operating procedure available via the following link:

The number of adult ECMO beds occupied during each week in January and February 2018, as recorded on a Monday (unless otherwise stated) is shown below:

During the period 1 November to 31 March, NHS England monitors capacity on a weekly basis (increasing this frequency if required).

NHS England has no plans to routinely publish this information. This information is used by NHS England to inform discussions on operational service pressures and future capacity plans for ECMO.
