The question has been interpreted as requesting detail regarding the level of income generated from the treatment of private patients by National Health Service providers. The term ‘NHS providers’ incorporates both NHS trusts and NHS foundation trusts (FTs).

The income generated from the treatment of private patients by NHS providers is reported as a separate line item in the Department’s Annual Report and Accounts (ARA), notes to the accounts.

The NHS trust and FT figures which compose the provider totals given in the ARA are as follows:

Year

NHS trusts (£000s)

NHS FTs (£000s)

NHS Provider Total (£000s)

2010-11

175,399

253,076

428,745

2011-12

177,312

275,179

452,491

2012-13

127,197

351,452

478,649

2013-14

120,818

380,890

501,708

2014-15

130,217

395,921

526,138

2015-16

123,445

434,749

558,194

2016-17

121,929

462,054

583,983

Prior to 2010-11 the Department’s ARA did not report ‘income from private patients’ as a specific line item and thus comparable information for prior years is unavailable.
