The average age of judges, both salaried and fee-paid, who left the judiciary before retirement age for any reason is as follows:

  • 2018-19: 65.9 for courts judges, 64.2 for tribunals judges
  • 2019-20: 65.4 for courts judges, 64.5 for tribunals judges
  • 2020-21: 64.7 for courts judges, 64.3 for tribunals judges

These periods run from 01 April to 31 March.

Retirement age is taken to mean the current judicial mandatory retirement age of 70 years. Therefore, these averages are based on those leaving the judiciary on any date before their 70th birthday. Those who left on or after their 70th birthday are not included.

This data is taken from the Diversity of the Judiciary annual statistics.
