Question to the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology:

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, what steps her Department is taking to ensure that Government policy keeps up to date with the rapid development of AI technologies.

AI is the defining technology of our lifetime. The engine of economic power and hard power, with the potential to transform almost every aspect of our lives. However, how this transformation will unfold and what can be done to shape it remains highly uncertain.

This is why our priority is to have the best empirical understanding of AI capabilities, trajectories and impacts, so that our policy making is informed by the best available evidence. Through the AI Security Institute (AISI) we are conducting testing and research on the most advanced AI systems to monitor how AI capabilities are advancing. Through the AI Economics Institute, we will analyse how AI is affecting productivity, labour markets, and growth to build a solid understanding of the broader economic impacts of AI.
