Explicitly name Selective Mutism in national SEND training for schools

Selective Mutism is not named in SEND training published 24/09/26. It affects 1 in 140 children. We feel that more must be done to ensure it is supported in schools — where it happens.

We ask Government to name it explicitly in the guidance, to work with expert organisations and include it in 2027 updates of the guidance.

In our view, when unnamed and excluded from this guidance, selective mutism can be misunderstood and negatively impact the student who may risk school avoidance and becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training). We believe support and safeguarding must be in place and is important when children cannot speak up and say “no”, “stop” or “I am hurt”. Support can be environmental adaptations, which may benefit every child. We call on the Government to involve experts and organisations specialised in selective mutism when reviewing this guidance.
