We ask the UK Government to include “Indo-Caribbean” as an ethnic group option on Government documents, alongside existing categories, so people of Indian-Caribbean heritage can accurately identify their ethnicity and be better represented in UK equality data.

Indo-Caribbean identity has a direct connection to British history. Under British indentureship, approximately half a million Indians were brought to the Caribbean. During the Windrush era, descendants of these indentured labourers migrated to the UK, contributing to the growth and diversity of Britain’s Caribbean community. Yet ethnicity monitoring forms provide no clear space for Indo-Caribbean people. We think recognition would reflect this distinct heritage, improve representation and data accuracy, and help public bodies better understand the communities they serve.
