Add homophobic abuse to the Football Offences Act 1991

An amendment is required to the outdated Football Offences Act 1991. At the very least, homophobic verbal abuse, chanting or behaviour should be made an illegal and arrestable offence if it occurs inside a football ground. Often argued that other protected characteristics should be included too.

Football is supposed to be a sport for everyone. Sadly, the beautiful game is not always as welcoming as it could be.

While some clubs have made great strides in tackling the issue, others have made very slow progress.

There is a lack of consistency nationally which needs to be addressed. Only a change in the law would bring this about.

Other strategies could certainly help to eradicate discrimination from football stadiums as well. E.g. more funding for anti-discrimination education.
