Those diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism (over active thyroid) must pay for prescriptions for thyroid medication in order to live. If they do not take medications to suppress thyroid activity they will die. This is for the rest of their lives, unless in remission.Yet people with Hypothyroidism (underactive Thyroid) or those who have removed their thyroid and are on Levothyroxine are exempt from prescription costs. Hyperthyroidism is considered more dangerous because of the side affects on the heart.
