Glyphosate: Urban Areas
Asked by: Tracey Crouch (Conservative - Chatham and Aylesford) Monday 20th May 2024 Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, whether he has made a recent assessment of the potential impact of the use of glyphosate in urban areas on (a) human health and (b) the environment. Answered by Mark Spencer A pesticide may only be authorised and placed on the GB market once the active substance it contains has been approved. This happens following a thorough risk assessment carried out by our expert regulator, the Health and Safety Executive. Glyphosate is currently approved as an active substance for use in pesticide products in GB.
Glyphosate was reviewed in 2016 (when the UK was an EU Member State). The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that glyphosate is unlikely to pose any risks to human health and the environment. When the GB approval of glyphosate is next reviewed, we will again consider our position based on the legal requirements and a careful scientific assessment of the evidence and risks. The Government’s first priority with regard to pesticides is to ensure that they will not harm people or pose unacceptable risks to the environment.
It is for each Local Authority to decide the best way of delivering effective and cost-effective weed control in its operations without harming people or the environment. There is a legal requirement to minimise the use of pesticides along roads and in areas used by the public.
We want to address some of the key barriers to uptake of integrated pest management in the amenity sector and reduce reliance on pesticides, whilst recognising the continuing role pesticides will play, for example, in making sure public highways are accessible and safe. |

Innovation showcase Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (Select) Not accepting submissions Does the UK do enough to champion science and tech start-ups and scale-ups? The Committee aims to map out the landscape for the UK’s innovators, to give them a platform to tell their stories, and to identify what more the government and industry should do to support them. The cross-party Committee will hear from innovative companies and researchers through weekly “showcase sessions”, which will take place before its main evidence session each week. During this slot, showcase speakers will give a 5-minute presentation, covering their stories and their views on the wider operating environment, and whether they need more support from the Government and industry. The Committee will use their stories to explore the UK innovation landscape, including the regulatory framework and the investment and funding ecosystem; and to identify what the Government could do to improve it. |

Innovation, growth and the regions Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (Select) Not accepting submissions The Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee is launching an inquiry into “Innovation, growth and the regions” to assess the role of the UK’s innovation ecosystem in achieving the Government’s mission to kickstart economic growth across the country. The inquiry will consider the role of structural factors—such as the tax system, regulatory requirements, and standards—in influencing the success of start-ups, spin-outs, and other innovation-focused enterprises. The Committee will assess the health of the country’s innovation ecosystem across the nations and regions. It will look at the interplay of local and national government policy, access to investment, research clusters, and infrastructure in fostering innovation and making the regions an engine for growth. It will explore how universities and businesses work together to commercialise research and to tackle obstacles such as funding and market access. It will evaluate the link between innovation and economic growth both regionally and nationally, drawing lessons from international comparators and considering the impact of regional clusters and hubs, including the Catapult network. |

Digital centre of government Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (Select) Not accepting submissions Following the general election, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announced plans to become the “digital centre of government”. It was also confirmed that the Government Digital Service, Central Digital and Data Office and Incubator for Artificial Intelligence would move from the Cabinet Office into DSIT, to “unite efforts in the digital transformation of public services under one department”. Since the election DSIT has published three reviews to inform this work: a blueprint for digital government, an assessment of digital capability across government, and an AI Opportunities Action Plan. It has also confirmed that the digital centre will be known as the Government Digital Service. The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee is launching an inquiry to suggest priorities for the new Government Digital Service, scrutinise DSIT’s planned approach to implementation, and identify opportunities and challenges. |
