Give the Speaker the power to recall the House of Commons as they see fit
- Final Signatures: 2,357
To enable proper parliamentary discussion and support parliamentary sovereignty, the Speaker of the House of Commons should have the powers to recall Parliament as they see fit
Make it a requirement for MPs to participate in all votes
- Final Signatures: 195
We demand that Members of Parliament (MPs) no longer be allowed to abstain on parliamentary votes. MPs are paid to do a job and we believe abstaining does not represent their constituents and is a dereliction of responsibility.
Parliament should introduce legislation that would require the Prime Minister and all members of the Cabinet to publish their tax returns annually. Such a law would go a long way in restoring trust in our politicians and in politics more widely.
There is currently a significant backlog of petitions. Some have been waiting over 100 days.
The Government have stated they have other priorities for Commons time, but petitions are an important way that the public can be heard. There must be time set aside in Parliament for their debate.
Mandatory drug tests for all MPs, Lords & their staff
- Final Signatures: 141
We demand to have every single member of parliament, peer and their staff be screened for illegal drugs, immediately and at random intervals. This should be in place until UK drug policy is fundamentally reformed.
Ban MPs from other paid work or holding shares in companies
- Final Signatures: 191
MPs to be prevented from taking paid employment, holding directorships, undertaking paid consultancy or holding shares in individual companies. Unpaid charity work will be unaffected. MPs would be required to liquidate all shares (except diverse multi-sector funds) within 6 months of being elected.
Change this service so that we can sign either FOR or AGAINST a petition
- Final Signatures: 23
For a given topic, this will provide a public response that is both larger and more balanced.
The Government must ensure that those who bring shame on Parliament by being found to have breached the MPs code of conduct, can no longer be appointed to the House of Lords. I want our democracy to be respected and for the electorate to believe in the probity of Parliament.
Hold a confidence/no confidence referendum on the government every 2.5 years
- Final Signatures: 51
Mid-way through a Prime Minister’s time in office (5 years), a referendum should be held on whether the general public has confidence, or no confidence, in the current government. If a majority vote 'no confidence' this should then lead to a general election.
