Transcaucasus: Security
Asked by: Stephen Doughty (Labour (Co-op) - Cardiff South and Penarth) Tuesday 21st May 2024 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, what recent assessment he has made of the (a) security and (b) stability of the Caucasus region. Answered by Nusrat Ghani - Minister of State (Minister for Europe) The UK strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the three states that make up the South Caucasus region. The UK welcomes recent peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the agreed progress on the delimitation of their international border. We wish to see a lasting and sustainable peace settlement reached as soon as possible and stand ready to support this process. The UK remains a close supporter of Georgian democracy and Euro-Atlantic aspirations in line with the will of the Georgian people and stands with Georgia against Russian hybrid pressure. |
Armenia: Foreign Relations
Asked by: Alex Sobel (Labour (Co-op) - Leeds North West) Wednesday 8th May 2024 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, what his Department's timescales are for the conclusion of the negotiations for the UK-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement. Answered by Nusrat Ghani - Minister of State (Minister for Europe) The UK values our ongoing cooperation with Armenia towards agreeing a UK-Armenia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The timescale for concluding the agreement is subject to final negotiations and legal processes in both countries. |
Nagorno Karabakh: Cultural Heritage
Asked by: Lord Bishop of Southwark (Bishops - Bishops) Wednesday 8th May 2024 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask His Majesty's Government what representations they have made to the government of Azerbaijan regarding the protection of Armenian heritage in Nagorno–Karabakh following the recent destruction of the St John the Baptist Church and the Ghazanchetsots cemetery in Shusha, and the nearby village of Karin Tak/Dashalti. Answered by Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) We are clear that the preservation of religious and cultural sites in the region is an important issue and we take seriously reports of the destruction of churches or other sites of religious significance. We are aware of allegations from both Armenia and Azerbaijan that cultural and religious sites have been deliberately damaged over the course of the conflict. British Embassy in Baku have raised the topic of religious and cultural destruction and the need to protect such sites with the Azerbaijani government consistently and at the most senior levels. |
Russia: Sanctions
Asked by: Stephen Doughty (Labour (Co-op) - Cardiff South and Penarth) Tuesday 7th May 2024 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, what steps he has taken to prevent the transit of items in circumvention of UK sanctions (a) to and (b) from (i) Russia and (ii) Belarus via third countries. Answered by Anne-Marie Trevelyan - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) Along with the EU, US and Japan, the UK has published a list of 50 sensitive technologies and other items Russia is most actively seeking to procure via third countries. Working closely with G7 partners, we have stepped up our engagement with third countries to address circumvention risks, including sending joint delegations to the UAE, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, and Armenia, to highlight risks and offer technical support. HMG is also setting up the Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation, which will boost the enforcement and implementation of UK trade sanctions. |
