Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what discussions they have had with (1) the government of Burma about the culture of impunity which has enabled the Burmese military potentially to carry out crimes against humanity, and (2) international partners about holding perpetrators to account through international judicial mechanisms.

The Government consistently calls on the Burmese authorities to hold to account members of its military responsible for human rights violations. The UK Ambassador to Burma called on the Commander in Chief of Burma's military to endorse an inquiry into human rights violations in Rakhine in their meeting of 3 May. The UK has discussed the applicability of international justice mechanisms to the situation in Burma with a range of international partners. Following the UN Security Council's visit to Burma the UK worked with partners to agree a joint UNSC press statement that called for Burma to fulfil its commitment to holding accountable perpetrators of violence. The Foreign Secretary also discussed this with his G7 counterparts, together calling on Burma to establish a clear pathway toward accountability for the atrocities committed in Rakhine State in the G7 Foreign Ministers communique.
