The Government of Iraq prosecutes Daesh fighters under Iraqi law. The death penalty continues to be applied for certain offences in Iraq, including terrorism. We regularly make our opposition to the death penalty clear. The Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa reiterated our position with the Iraqi Justice Minister during his visit to Iraq on 26 April 2018 and stressed the importance of transparent judicial processes and adherence to international standards.

The Iraqi Prime Minister Al - Abadi has been clear that international human rights law must be respected. We will continue to hold him to this commitment.
