Arms Trade: Exports

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what is their policy regarding the ongoing sale of weapons to nations which have been shown to have used UK-manufactured weapons for the purpose of illegal attacks or other human rights abuses.

This question was answered on 6th December 2017

The Government takes its arms export responsibilities very seriously and operates one of the most robust arms export control regimes in the world. We examine every application rigorously on a case-by-case basis against the Consolidated EU and National Arms Export Licensing Criteria. Risks around human rights abuses are a key part of our assessment. We do not export equipment where we assess there is a clear risk that it might be used for internal repression or in the commission of a serious violation of international humanitarian law or would provoke or prolong conflict within a country, or would be used aggressively against another country.
