Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what recent representations he has made to the Hungarian government on the treatment of refugees in Hungary.

The British Embassy in Budapest has been following closely the situation of refugees who enter Hungary and our staff have visited the border with Serbia, reception centres, and Keleti railway station in Budapest. They have also discussed this issue with the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We will continue to monitor the situation in Hungary as elsewhere in Europe closely, and to press the case for a comprehensive plan to deal with the current situation as the Prime Minister has said. Collectively, the EU needs to deal with the causes of the crisis, not just its consequences. We will work with all our European partners on this, and we, along with France and Germany, called for an emergency summit which will take place on 14 September.
