Question to the Department for Education:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, if she will make an assessment of the potential merits of including acquired brain injury as a specific category in the special educational needs survey.
Children who have had a brain injury can be affected in different ways. Some brain injuries will result in a special educational need (SEN) or a medical need, whilst others may affect a child in other ways. We are moving to a needs‑led SEND system so that children and young people support based on their needs, not on a diagnosis or label. We are investing up to £15 million in National Inclusion Standards and funding new UKRI‑led research to strengthen early identification and the use of evidence‑based support in settings. For those with the most complex needs, Specialist Provision Packages will provide comprehensive, evidence-based support.
