The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) introduces a new right to data portability, which will allow individuals to have their personal data provided by a data controller (like a social networking website) in a commonly used machine readable format; and where practical, have such data transmitted directly to another controller.

The GDPR will be directly applicable in the UK from 25 May 2018.
