Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what plans his Department has to increase the number of psychiatrists employed by the NHS.

Health Education England is developing a mental health workforce plan, for publication later this year. This plan will set out how we ensure we have the staff, including psychiatrists, in place to deliver the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health.

NHS Digital publishes data on National Health Service staff groups. The latest data for March 2017 shows that the number of full time equivalent doctors working in the Psychiatry group in the National Health Service is 8,732.
