The department recognises the concerns highlighted by the Big Tech’s Little Victims campaign and is committed to keeping children safe online.

The department’s refreshed curriculum, on which we will be consulting later this year, will strengthen digital and media literacy, with first teaching from September 2028.

Following the ‘Growing up in the online world’ consultation, social media companies will be prohibited from offering services to under-16s. The department is planning regulations under the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 this year, with restrictions effective from spring 2027.

The government has also launched a call for evidence on children’s screen use. This closed in June 2026 and will inform evidence-based guidance for parents, supporting healthy, safe and balanced screen use.

The ‘You Won’t Know Until You Ask’ pilot campaign and the Kids Online Safety Hub help parents and carers support children’s critical thinking, resilience and safe online habits.
