Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps her Department is taking to support funding for a) Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood and b) other neurological conditions caused by the mutant gene – ATP1a3.
Funding for rare neurological conditions is determined through established National Health Service allocation, commissioning arrangements and the annual planning round, which usually takes into account population need and clinical priorities to determine the best available use of resources. For delegated services, integrated care boards determine how their allocations are used to meet local need, while NHS England retains responsibility for nationally commissioned highly specialised services.
NHS England commissions specialised service for children with complex neurological conditions, including neurogenetic conditions, such as alternating hemiplegia of childhood, and its service specification sets out a national, multidisciplinary models for assessment and care planning.
