Question to the Department for Education:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, if she will provide targeted funding for sustained, independent careers guidance for students most at risk of becoming NEETs.
High-quality careers guidance can play an important role in reducing the likelihood of a young person becoming not in education, employment or training (NEET). Evidence suggests that the greatest benefits are for those facing disadvantages and other barriers.
Schools and colleges already have a statutory duty to secure access to independent careers guidance for pupils and students. The department expects institutions to invest in personal guidance delivered by qualified careers professionals to support those who need it most.
The department is strengthening support for the early identification of young people at risk of becoming NEET through the development and roll-out of OnTrack+, helping education providers effectively target interventions such as independent careers guidance. We are also funding the design and delivery of a continuing professional development programme for careers advisers, including modules focused on supporting young people at risk of becoming NEET.
