Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, whether he has made an assessment of the potential merits of using sanctions to help ensure that the Federal Government of Nigeria follows Opinion No. 25/2022 of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, published on 17 August 2022, regarding the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office will take the steps we consider most effective regarding our consular assistance to Mr Kanu and will keep these under review, as has been done in the past. We do not speculate on future sanctions as doing so can limit their impact.
