There are no plans to include specific provisions for the use of green technologies in the forthcoming Code of Practice for testing Driverless cars in the UK. Nonetheless, the use of driverless technology is expected to deliver environmental benefits by reducing unnecessary acceleration and braking, resulting in smoother, more efficient and cleaner journeys.

As well as the trials of driverless cars in four UK cities, the government is funding a range of other activities in this area. In addition, the non-regulatory approach of the Code is expected to encourage those wishing to develop and test these technologies to do so in the UK.
