Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what steps he is taking to maximise the use of donated organs.
The six years between April 2008 and April 2014 has seen a strengthening of the donation programme; increasing donation rates by 63% and transplant rates by 47%. The number of people registering for organ donation has increased by over 3 million since 2010 to over 20 million. NHS Blood and Transplant launched a United Kingdom strategy in July 2013 - Taking Organ Transplantation to 2020 - that sets the agenda for increasing organ donation and transplantation rates over the next seven years. This includes an aim to transplant 5% more of the organs offered from donors through work to increase the number of organs retrieved, offered and accepted for transplant.
