Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment he has made of recent trends in the level of infant mortality in (a) Birmingham and (b) the West Midlands.
The Office for National Statistics publishes annual data on child and infant mortality in England and Wales.
The data shows that the rates of infant mortality have decreased in Birmingham and the West Midlands (Metropolitan County) between 2016 and 2018, the most recent year for which data is available.
Year | Infant mortality rate (deaths per 1,000 live births) | |
| West Midlands (Metropolitan County) | Birmingham |
2016 | 7.1 | 8.2 |
2017 | 6.3 | 7.1 |
2018 | 6.3 | 6.4 |
