Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what recent assessment he has made of China’s policy towards Hong Kong; and if he will make a statement.

We are clear that China remains in an ongoing state of non-compliance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration; a legally binding and internationally recognised treaty China willingly entered into. Actions by the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities, including the imposition of National Security Law, have eroded the civil and political rights promised to Hong Kongers. As the Foreign Secretary outlined on 25 April, we are entitled to act when China breaks its obligations, as we did by giving nearly 3 million Hong Kongers a path to British citizenship. We will continue to act as a convening power, bringing together our international partners to stand up for the people of Hong Kong, to call out violations of their rights and freedoms, and to hold China to its international obligations.
