Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what additional safety measures are being considered to ensure that the decision to move to an overall nuclear weapon stockpile of no more than 260 warheads does not increase risks to the public safety of civilians in the UK.

The UK is a responsible Nuclear Weapons State and the safety of the public is of the highest priority. We have rigorous measures in place to ensure the safety and security of our nuclear weapon stockpile, irrespective of its size. All aspects of the warhead programme and weapon stockpile are subject to a robust assurance process including regulatory oversight.
