Question to the Department for Education:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, how many and what proportion of teachers teaching maths (a) are qualified maths teachers and (b) hold a relevant post A level qualification for each type of 16-19 provider.

In 2017, there were 34,600 teachers of maths in state funded secondary schools. Of these, 78.0% of teachers had a relevant post A level qualification in mathematics or a related subject such as statistics. A relevant post A level qualification is defined as a first degree or higher, BEd degree, PGCE, Certificate of Education or another qualification at level 4 or above.

These figures relate to all teachers in state funded secondary schools regardless of the age range of the school. Figures on the qualifications of teachers are not routinely broken down by the year group of the class taught.

No separate figures are available for all 16-19 providers.
