Question to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what assessment he has made on the effect of fake news disseminated on the internet on voting in the UK; and what steps he is taking to tackle fake news in relation to elections.

The first duty of Government is to safeguard the nation, and we take the security and integrity of our democratic processes very seriously. To date, we have not seen evidence of successful interference in UK democratic processes. However we are not complacent. DCMS is working across Government to develop a strategy to tackle disinformation, which is a key pillar of the Digital Charter.
