To ask the Secretary of State for Health, how many (a) men and (b) women aged (i) 10-20, (ii) 21-30, (iii) 31-40, (iv) 41-50, (v) 51-60, (vi) 61-70 and (vii) over 80 years were diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome in each of the last five years.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published best practice guidance for the diagnosis and management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Prevalence in the general population is estimated between 10% and 20%. IBS most often affects people between the ages of 20 and 30 years and is twice as common in women as in men.
