Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what assessment his Department has made of the potential effect that increasing magistrate’s sentencing powers to 12 months would have on the size of the (a) prison population and (b) court backlog.
This question was answered on 9th November 2020
The Government has no current plans to increase magistrates’ custodial sentencing powers and has made no recent assessment of the impact of doing so on the prison population and court backlog.
