Council Tax: Single People

Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, how many people claimed the single-person discount on council tax in the latest period for which data is available; and what the cost to the public purse was of this discount in the same period.

The latest available data for October 2023 shows there were approximately 8.6 million households in receipt of a single person discount. This data is available here - Council Taxbase 2023 in England - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). The Government does not collect data on the revenue foregone to provide the discount.
