Review parental responsibility for their child’s violent behaviour

We ask the Government to review and strengthen laws so that when young people repeatedly carry weapons or commit violent crimes, and parents fail to act, there are appropriate consequences for parents such as penalties or mandatory interventions to help prevent further harm and protect communities.

We are calling for greater accountability when young people repeatedly carry weapons or commit violent crimes. This is not about blaming every parent, but when warning signs are ignored and behaviour continues, we believe there must be consequences. Parents can be fined for taking children on holiday in term time, so we ask the Government to consider introducing penalties for parents if they are found to have ignored repeated violent behaviour.
