The Government should provide sufficient funding to the HMRC to enable it to keep the Self Assessment telephone helpline open all year so that everyone can access help with their tax affairs when they need it.
HMRC announced on 19 March that they will close the telephone helpline between 8 April and 30 September every year. On 20 March HMRC halted these plans to engage with its stakeholders. We want to ensure that the changes announced on 19 March are not reinstated.
We believe that the online automated service can give the wrong answer to the question that has been asked so some people will unintentionally submit incorrect information, resulting in the wrong amount of tax being paid.
