Create a specific offence of romance fraud and a register of romance fraudsters

We believe current laws do not address the seriousness of romance fraud, which can leave the victim feeling traumatised, humiliated, isolated and embarrassed. We want the Government to create a specific offence of romance fraud, with significant penalties, and a register of romance fraudsters

A specific offence of romance fraud could help make it clearer that this is an offence, and a register of romance fraudsters could help others avoid falling victim to offenders.

This crime can be hugely detrimental to the victim. We believe current laws mean that victims can be retraumatised or not taken seriously, and be dismissed by authorities family or friends. This must change.
