Reform the Honours System and make it independent of Government

We want the Honours System to be reformed so honours are only granted to those who perform acts of exceptional bravery or humanitarianism and those who do exceptional work for the community, for charity or for the environment.

The system should also be wholly independent of the Government.

We believe the present Honours System is an anachronistic absurdity. Honours committees include senior civil servants, a representative from 10 Downing Street is invited to attend committee meetings, and the committee’s recommendations go to the Prime Minister and then to the King, who awards the honour.

We believe the current system results in a disproportionate number of honours going to politicians, public servants and public figures. Honours should be for those who perform acts of exceptional bravery or humanitarianism and those in the voluntary sector who do exceptional voluntary work for the community, for charity or for the environment.
