Change the law so people vote for a party instead of a person in elections

Having signed a petition to make MPs who change parties have to have a by election I was told that people do NOT vote for the party but for the person. This seems completely wrong and needs to be changed in law. People vote for the party over the person.

Apparently people vote for an individual MP on a General Election and not a Party. Every single person I know and have ever known has always voted for a party. The law needs changing so that it is classed as the party being selected rather than the MP.
