Temporary Accommodation: Children
Friday 11th January 2019

Asked by: Wes Streeting (Labour - Ilford North)

Question to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities:

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, how many children were living in temporary accommodation in (a) the London Borough of Redbridge, (b) Greater London and (c) England in each year since 2010.

Answered by Heather Wheeler

The Government Publishes the number of children who are living in temporary accommodation, at local authority, London and national level. You are able to find these statistics at the following link: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/live-tables-on-homelessness.

The Government is committed to reducing homelessness and rough sleeping. No one should ever have to sleep rough. That is why last summer we published the cross-government Rough Sleeping Strategy. This sets out an ambitious £100 million package to help people who sleep rough now, but also puts in place the structures that will end rough sleeping once and for all. The Government has now committed over £1.2 billion to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over the spending review period.

Local Government Finance: Redbridge
Tuesday 27th March 2018

Asked by: Wes Streeting (Labour - Ilford North)

Question to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities:

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, how much funding is Department allocated to London Borough of Redbridge in each year since May 2010.

Answered by Rishi Sunak - Prime Minister, First Lord of the Treasury, Minister for the Civil Service, and Minister for the Union

Spending Power is a measure of resources available to a local authority to fund its services. It includes Settlement Funding Assessment (business rates baseline funding level plus Revenue Support Grant), Council Tax and other central government grants.

Prior to 2013-14, Formula Grant was non-ring fenced money for local government services. It was funded by central government grant and redistributed business rates. Post 2013-14, Settlement Funding Assessment became the way central government provided local authorities with non-ring fenced funding for local government services.

Details of Redbridge Spending Power and the contribution from formula grant or the Settlement Funding Assessment can be found on line at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/final-local-government-finance-settlement-england-2017-to-2018

Since 2010 there have been changes to the finance and function of local government, therefore spending power, Formula Grant and Settlement Funding Assessment are not directly comparable over this period.

Social Rented Housing
Monday 17th July 2017

Asked by: Wes Streeting (Labour - Ilford North)

Question to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities:

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, what assessment he has made of the trend in the number of new homes available for social rent since 2010.

Answered by Alok Sharma - COP26 President (Cabinet Office)

Since 2010 we have delivered nearly 333,000 affordable homes, including over 240,000 homes for rent.

The number of new homes for social rent has declined because the government is building homes for Affordable Rent.

These require less subsidy, meaning more homes can be built for every pound spent.

Written Question
Local Government Finance: Redbridge
Tuesday 27th June 2017

Asked by: Wes Streeting (Labour - Ilford North)

Question to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities:

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, what central Government funding was allocated to the London Borough of Redbridge in each year since May 2010.

Answered by Marcus Jones - Treasurer of HM Household (Deputy Chief Whip, House of Commons)

The table below shows Redbridge's revenue support grant in each year since 2010. Prior to 2013-14, the Government allocated councils Formula Grant, funded from redistributed business rates and Revenue Support Grant. In 2013-14 the Government introduced 50 per cent business rates retention. Therefore, Revenue Support Grant before 2013-14 is not comparable to Revenue Support Grant from 2013-14 onwards. Redbridge will also have received funding from other government departments through Section 31 grants administered by DCLG. The table also presents Redbridge's total net current expenditure for each year in the period where the data is available.

Written Question
Homelessness
Thursday 18th June 2015

Asked by: Wes Streeting (Labour - Ilford North)

Question to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities:

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, what estimate he has made of the number of homeless people in the UK in each year since May 2010; and what steps he is taking to prevent homelessness in the UK.

Answered by Marcus Jones - Treasurer of HM Household (Deputy Chief Whip, House of Commons)

The homelessness legislation in England provides one of the strongest safety nets in the world for families with children and vulnerable people who become homeless through no fault of their own. Since 2010, the Government has invested over £500 million to support local authorities and voluntary sector agencies to prevent and tackle homelessness. This has helped prevent over 700,000 cases of homelessness by finding new accommodation or helping people stay in their own home.

Statistics on homelessness in England are published on a quarterly basis at the following address; https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/live-tables-on-homelessness

Homelessness acceptances are now less than half of the peak seen under the previous Labour administration when it reached 135,590 in 2003.
