The regulations set out how the carbon border adjustment mechanism will work in practice from 1 January 2027. In North Somerset, where residents care deeply about the environment, the principle matters. Imports should not escape a carbon price that UK producers already pay. As the Member for a farming constituency, I know that my farmers will appreciate the answers that my right hon. Friend the Minister gave earlier. Importers who have paid a genuine carbon price abroad can claim relief, but only under qualifying schemes, with independently verified data and six years of record-keeping. That guards against greenwashing and double-charging and is a sensible adjustment mechanism.
