Urgent Questions are proposed each morning by backbench MPs, and up to two may be selected each day by the Speaker. Chosen Urgent Questions are announced 30 minutes before Parliament sits each day.

Each Urgent Question requires a Government Minister to give a response on the debate topic.

This information is provided by Parallel Parliament and does not comprise part of the offical record

The Department for Work and Pensions stands ready to support anyone affected by this announcement with our rapid response service offer. The service is designed to give support and advice to employers and their employees when they are faced with redundancy. The Minister for Employment, my hon. Friend the Member for Stretford and Urmston (Andrew Western), will be having a meeting with all Members, including me, later this afternoon, and the hon. Lady may wish to come and put further questions to me or to my hon. Friend from the DWP.

Among the 12,000 Poundland workers whose jobs are now at risk are those based at Low Petergate in York. In the light of Gordon Brothers’ egregious conduct, will the Minister look into the role of private equity companies in the retail sector? In the past two weeks Modella Capital has closed TG Jones in our high street, and we see this behaviour repeatedly from such companies. Will my hon. Friend consider regulations that we could debate in the House to ensure that we protect the retail sector?

I thank my hon. Friend for her reflections on what she feels needs to change in the future. At this stage, the key priority is keeping the business trading and protecting jobs, and she will have noted our commitment to engagement. We do not want to impede or influence ongoing negotiations around a private business, as the process is live and constantly moving. I hope my hon. Friend will be reassured about my engagement and that of the Secretary of State with the business and the union representatives this week, and we will continue to watch the situation closely, but protecting jobs is the absolute priority of this Government.

13. If he will take steps to help ensure Post Office provision in every community.

Kate Dearden Portrait The Minister for the Future of Work (Kate Dearden)
- Hansard - - - Excerpts

The Government recognise the vital role that post offices play in communities across the UK. We have committed to maintaining the 11,500 national minimum branch requirement, and the Government’s set access criteria, including the requirement that for 90% of the population, their nearest post office should be within one mile of where they live. We are backing this with up to £180 million in network subsidy funding over the next three years to support the cost of meeting those policy requirements, protecting access to crucial services.

When York’s Crown post office closed after 138 years, we were given assurances that through WHSmith, we would have a sustained solution. However, Modella Capital, which has taken over WHSmith, closed the post office yesterday. We only have a teeny weeny post office in the city centre. Businesses, residents and tourists are dependent on it—we need a solution. I have met the Post Office; it says that it will take six months to get a solution. I need a solution now. What steps will the Minister take to ensure that we have a temporary solution before we get our sustained outcome?

I recognise my hon. Friend’s concerns about the availability of post office services in York city centre in the coming months. The Post Office has confirmed that it remains committed to providing a replacement branch, and it has received interest from several potential applicants. While these are operational matters for the Post Office, I will ask it to consider capacity concerns. I will keep my hon. Friend updated, and will ask officials to work with her and the Post Office on finding the temporary solution that she rightly mentions.

It was a pleasure to meet the hon. Member and the hospitality sector in her constituency recently. There are a wide range of factors when introducing new tax reliefs, and they need to happen in the usual way. The alleviation that we have already introduced on NIC is making a real difference to young people getting into employment. We will review it in the usual way in due course.

In October, Nestlé announced 16,000 job losses, including 450 in the UK. In the light of the significant impact that this will have in York, will the Secretary of State ensure that meaningful consultation happens with the trade unions, and will he meet them to save those jobs?
